If you’re just starting to get into cannabis products, there may be some relevant terms that you don’t quite understand. Two of the most common are cannabinoids and terpenes. Let’s break down what exactly these two things are.
What are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoid is a term that describes many different chemical substances found in the cannabis plant. The most common cannabinoids that you’ve probably already heard of are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). They’re also the most abundant cannabinoids in the plant but in total there are more than 100 known cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids produce a range of effects by reacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the body. They activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain to reduce pain, increase appetite, and ease anxiety, for example.
What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are another type of organic compound found in the cannabis plant and other plants. If you’ve ever noticed that one strain of cannabis smells and tastes different than another, that’s because of the terpenes. Like cannabinoids, there are more than 100 cannabinoids identified by researchers.
Terpenes work together with the cannabinoids in a strain to produce distinct effects. The terpenes themselves are not responsible for producing the high associated with cannabis, however. You may want to consider the concentration of terpenes before deciding on a strain.
